The Item Apocalypse of June 2012

Do you have some artwork that you'd like people to see? Enter in Animal Jam Stream's Weekly Featured Masterpiece contest by Friday to have your piece displayed on this blog for over a hundred Jammers like you to admire! Click here for a post including the (easy) steps to enter.  ^-^

Hey Jammers! I've made it a personal goal to post every single day on this blog for at least all of this week. You see, school is out for me for February break!!! I haven't the slightest clue why my school district has a February break, but still. No school! :D

I've just realized that I haven't talked about a daily item all year. I guess that would make today the first, because we have a pretty cool item in store today! So cool, in fact, only the cool cats can wear it.

HAHA, GET IT???? COOL CATS?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHhfghjkl

Seriously though, this is one of the best Rare Item Mondays we've had in a while! It's got everything: lavender-ness, nonmember-ness, and it's cat-related, too. It's an all-in-one 10/10 rare item!

It's a pretty cool item, indeed. Not my absolute favorite Rare Item Monday, though, that would be the Rare Heart Locket:

It was released in the Shiveer Shoppe sometime during the cold months of 2012.

The first time I learned what a Rare Item Monday was was on the day when the Rare Tie was released in Jam Mart Clothing:

Are you noticing something odd about the look of these two items? Something a little simpler, less 3D?

That's because they were released before... The Great Item Apocalypse of June 2012.

If you weren't around to remember this dreaded event, gather 'round. Let me tell you the story...

~

It was an early summer night just like any other in Jamaa. Many kids were up past their bedtime playing around on computers, the sound of crickets outside mingling with the tinny sound of "AJ Melody" playing at minimum volume, as not to wake anybody up. The computer screen glared through animations of Jammers doing whatever they did on Animal Jam late at night, from trading to roleplaying to anything in between. I, for one, was decorating my den.

I was about to place my Koi Pond item by the base of my castle den when a notification popped up. It said that an unexpected update was soon to commence. It said I would be kicked off AJ until the morning. Begrudgingly, I logged off and went to sleep, unknowing of the horrors that would await me– and everyone else –upon waking.

We all woke up to chaos. Friends fought. Clans disbanded. Riots BROKE OUT IN THE STREETS OF JAMAA TOWNSHIP ALL BECAUSE...

THIS...

TURNED INTO THIS:

All clothing items went from charming pixel 2D to nauseating, gooey 3D. There was no clear reason behind this change, and no one was the least bit happy.

Five years have passed since that fateful day. You could say it's in the past, but some say that if you listen really closely to the wind on a hot Summer night, you can still hear the complaining...

~

And that, my friends, is the story of the Great Item Apocalypse of June 2012. Things really haven't been the same since, at least in terms of clothing item icons. The items themselves have almost always looked the same, so not everything was lost.

You know, I've been seeing a lot of Jammers being really nostalgic about Animal Jam, even saying sometimes that AJ is just getting worse and worse.

When I joined in 2012, people were nostalgic for 2010-2011 Animal Jam. In 2016-2017, people are now nostalgic for 2012-2013, even 2014 Animal Jam.

The truth is that AJ isn't 100% perfect and has never been 100% perfect. It's always had problems, sometimes different problems at different times. In 2012-2013, the bullying problem was at an all-time high. If some elitist member was attacking a nonmember, no one bat an eye. If you didn't accept an unfair trade, the other person would insult you until you gave up a rare item.

There was also some pretty cool stuff in 2012-2013. New features weren't released as fast so they were easier to keep up with, and when they were released, everyone celebrated! AJ blogs were way more popular than AJ YouTube videos, so there were way less "giveaways," or "mailtimes". And consequentially because you can't make a lot of money off of blogging, bloggers just wrote posts because it was fun. There was very little clickbait.

A lot of what people seem to miss from "ye olden days" of Jamaa is actually the art style. It was noticeably more earthy and natural back then, which is why I believe items from beta testing were popular. That aesthetic is what we really want.

But all these things don't have to remain inaccessible in the past. While the Jamaa community might not be as tight-knit as it used to, great friends can still be found. A lot of people are obsessed with trading, but you can surely find people who don't care about rares.

What people really seem to miss about "old AJ" isn't just the year number. People miss concrete things, like item style, that can be brought back to some extent. Decorate your animal and den with your favorite old items, even if they aren't that rare anymore. Maybe use those suggestion boxes to ask for your favorite discontinued items and parties to be brought back.

Just surround yourself with the stuff that makes you happy. If the AJ community on social media is annoying you, then don't go on social media for a while. Or in general, if you want. It'll make you a lot happier.

Okay, that was a bit of a rant... but I hope it was a positive one. o_o

See you in Jamaa, guys! I promise another post tomorrow!

Weekly Featured Masterpiece – Winner #2!

Hey Jammers! Welcome to another week of wonderful artwork! :D

I wanna give a big shoutout to lpslover98989, 113457, jhana, Graciepopstar91, and purplestarclub for entering round #2! I really can't tell you how happy I get when I see a new entry. X)
If you're just arriving and don't know what the heck I'm talking about, it's fairly simple: this is an ongoing art contest on Animal Jam Stream that has one winner per week. The winner will have a post dedicated to them and their artwork, as well as have that artwork displayed at the top of the blog for everyone to admire!

If you're interested, keep on scrolling for the (very easy) steps to enter.

But before that, of course, who is this week's winning artist? Which wonderful piece will be chosen?

I'll tell you who...

...

...

...

The amazing jhana, that's who!!!

Jhana's Masterpiece of a wolf silhouetted against a pale gold moon is proof that applying hard work to a seemingly inflexible medium– like the pixel brush –can result in beautiful things. What's really cool about this piece is the interesting technique that jhana used to create wispy, light clouds. Take a look at this detail:

It looks like the artist was able to simply go over the moon and starry sky using a translucent setting of the pixel brush, but because that's impossible to do in the AJ Art Studio, they went for a more creative method.

One part of this cloud is over the moon and the other part is over the dark blue sky. The part over the moon was drawn using a more vibrant yellow color, so it looks like the moonlight goes through a translucent colorless cloud.

The cloud over the dark blue sky uses a similar technique, only it's drawn with a paler blue shade because the sky is dark. The stars under the cloud were drawn with a brighter blue because the clouds themselves are pale. It's very subtle, yet very beautiful.

You did an excellent job, jhana! :D

Digital cookies will be rewarded to all who provide warm feedback.
If you were one of the lovely artists who entered for Week #2 and have not yet won, feel free to enter once more! As I've always been saying, contests on AJ Stream usually only have a handful of entries so you always have a high chance of winning.

Here are the quick steps to enter:

Step 1: Display a Masterpiece that you drew on an unlocked Jammer Wall or in an unlocked den.

Step 2: Comment your username on any post on Animal Jam Stream! I will then go take a look at your artwork.

The winner will be announced next Friday, March 3rd. For a full week after that, they will have their art displayed at the top of the blog for many Jammers to see!

So everyone's legacy lives on, a little gallery of past winners will be included in each winner-announcement:

Winner of Week #1

So what are you waiting for, guys? Time to show off your artwork!!!

New Animal Detective

Hey Jammers! I know, I know, the update was yesterday... that's why I'm only going to talk about the most important part: the upcoming new animal. (No, I do not think the Spiked Collars are important enough to merit being on the front page.)

I really like how AJHQ put an extra layer of difficulty into figuring out the new animal. Instead of puzzles that completely reveal the animal upon completion, or a hidden image of the new animal somewhere in Jamaa, you have to look for discreet clues. There is no hidden image, but there are definitely signs...

I really love how you have to do some detective work rather than just be presented with the answer. Unlike many Jammers, I actually like the educational aspect of AJ.

There are wide, four-toed paw prints along with a deep claw scratch hidden between three lands: Sarepia Forest, Mt. Shiveer, and Coral Canyons.

So, what do these few clues tell us?

– This animal can be found in forests, tundra/taiga/mountains, and in deserts.
– Given the size of the tracks, this is a large quadrupedal creature, meaning that they have four legs.
– This creature probably sharpens their (already very sharp) claws on trees and rock.
– They have four toes on each paw.

Upon first seeing the claw marks in Sarepia Forest, I originally had the impression that this animal was smaller, like a skunk or wolverine. However, the paw shapes and sizes didn't match up, so I gave up on that hypothesis.

Maybe... the animal is a big cat?

I first thought it was a panther, because panthers scratch trees (as pictured above), but they only live in 2/3 of the biomes hinted at in Jamaa.

Perhaps the new creature is a mountain lion?

Let's see...

Do they live in forests, mountains, and deserts? Yep!

Do they have four toes on each of their four paws? Yep!

Do they sharpen their claws on trees?

Yep!

So in conclusion, the new animal is most likely a mountain lion!

Before I go, I just wanted to let you all know that I will be announcing the Masterpiece Winner on Sunday this time. That means you have an extra day to enter! Not a lot of people this time, so you have an especially high chance of winning.

If you want to enter, display a masterpiece you made in an unlocked den or on a Jammer Wall. Then, comment your username on any post here! You have a good chance that your masterpiece will be featured on this blog for many people to see. :)

That's all for now, see you in Jamaa!

New Land Coming Soon

Hey Jammers! I've had a very annoying cold for the past five days and have showed no signs of recovery yet. I'm going to get a lot of rest today, but I am still crossing my fingers for a snow day on Monday. I might be lucky. It's snowing pretty hard outside today.

However, today's post is not about me being sick or the snow being heavy. Today's post is about... the secret upcoming new land.

Allegedly, these are "leaked" screenshots of a new land right behind Appondale: the Phantom Wastelands:

Pretty spooky, huh? The top two images look a little hazy and weird, but that might just be because they're not done designing the land yet.

Something odd that I just realized is that the secret door to the Basement of Secrets is currently located in that area. I wonder if that means anything. Also, if this new land is legitimate, I wonder if they'll move the secret entrance to the actual basement door of the Chamber of Knowledge.

I'm not sure if this is the actual new land, but I can tell you one thing for sure: a new land will be announced when goats return from traveling.

The goats left mid-November of 2016, leaving an unusual note saying that they were going to travel in a boat. I had originally thought that the goats would have something to do with the Phantom Fortress saga, but now that it seems they don't, I'm fairly convinced they will announce their discovery of a new land upon their return.

Goats have been gone for around three months... so the new land is due anytime!

That's all for now. See you in Jamaa and don't forget to enter the masterpiece contest!

Weekly Featured Masterpiece – Winner #1!

Hey Jammers! I'd like to give a shout out to the wonderful Harmonypurr9, lostfairycookycupcake, and lpslover98989 for being the first brave Jammers to enter this contest. Today will be the day I choose this week's winning artist! Aren't y'all excited?
For those who are new to this blog, or haven't checked back in a while, this is an art contest I am starting that will have one winner per week. The winner will have their chosen Masterpiece displayed at the top of this blog for hundreds of people to see each day!

If you'd like to enter, keep scrolling to find out how. :)

But most important is this week's wonderful winner! Who, out of so many masterful artists, will win this amazing award?

...

...

Who, but cookycupcake, of course!!

Cookycupcake's work of art is just beautiful. This piece incorporates a trio of constellations– Cancer, Orion, and the Big Dipper –set against a warm purple galaxy, eternally drifting through a vast universe. You can see that the artist made excellent use of the airbrush tool in the AJ Art Studio to create the soft-textured appearance of stardust, as well as expertly blending many different colors together into a beautiful trail through the stars. Great work, cookycupcake! This is one truly awesome Masterpiece. :D

Kind comments are encouraged and will be rewarded with a digital cookie for your consideration toward this lovely artist.
If you entered this week's contest and have not won yet, you are free to enter again!

Because of today, I think that the winner of each week will be announced each Friday. After that winner is announced, their artwork will be displayed for 7 days while people enter their own drawings. At the end of those 7 days, the process will start all over again.

Now that the winner for week #1 has been chosen, you are free to enter the contest for week #2! Here's how:

Step 1: Display a Masterpiece you made in an unlocked den or on a Jammer Wall.

Step 2: Go to Animal Jam Stream and comment your AJ username on any post! I will see it and your artwork will be automatically entered into the contest.

Easy as that! (>^-^)>

This contest is off to a bit of a slow start, so be aware that you have a VERY HIGH chance of winning. This is a great way to show off your work to a large audience of Jammers!

So, artists, what are y'all waiting for? It's time to enter the contest for WEEK #2!!!
