HECK YEAH REFORESTATION

(Note: This is the first post I'm writing with the new Blogger interface, if anything looks weird, it's because of that!)

We don't necessarily have a full update in Animal Jam (Classic), but we got some awesome news that's even better, in my opinion!

Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe some person at AJHQ read one of the many posts on my blog where I wonder aloud about why we haven't got more information about Wildworks' tree planting initiative (like the post right before this one). Either way, this is really cool and I'm really happy to know this initiative is legitimate!

If you read my last post, you'll know that one of the Playing-for-the-Planet pledges Wildworks made around September was to plant trees for every membership.

As you might remember, in May there were a couple weeks where part of the proceeds from memberships purchased would go towards the important mission of planting trees... actually, no, it was April! Part of April and part of May:

This appeared like a test-run of Wildworks' pledge, as it only applied to memberships purchased within the two weeks before the next update.

I was super happy when this happened! Although, AJHQ didn't really hype up the tree-planting initiative– all the information about it was just at that little sentence at the bottom of this older Jamaa Journal page.

Maybe it's because they didn't want too many people getting memberships at this time and diverting money away from the game itself-- but I'm just guessing.

Also, there never was any information about where the trees would be planted, what organization/s would be involved, so it seemed kind of fishy at the time. Like the donation box in the Conservation Museum that doesn't go anywhere anymore.

Thankfully though, this initiative is legitimate! The organization Wildworks partnered with is called WeForest, we got an exact number of the amount of trees planted (16,000) and the exact location of the Luanshya district of Zambia

I went to the WeForest website and you can see Wildworks on its list of corporate sponsors:

And even more than that, you can find so many great details about the actual project they helped support! Even a map!!!

Even actual updates of the project!!

The whole reforestation project for the Luanshya district seems to center around reforestation through changing the way farmers manage their land:

Agroforestry is a way to rethink how human agriculture is usually done, to include and preserve trees in the landscape instead of killing them. You might be used to seeing vast expanses of uniform farmland... but that's the sign of a deeply hurt ecosystem.

Trees are vital members of ecosystems, holding soil together and preventing erosion, along with providing food and shelter for countless species. They are the vital anchors of life on this planet, and when vast acres of trees continue to be killed for the production of crops or grazing land... there's only bad things that come of that. Not just for trees, but for the crops and people themselves.

I mentioned that trees hold soil together, preventing erosion (erosion is the soil nutrients washing away in storms or in wind). Trees also prevent the soil's water from evaporating too fast, AND actually add nutrients to the soil through networks of fungi! All of these things are important for growing crops, so why isn't more farmland managed this way?

You see... "normal" farming techniques are not actually the best techniques for crops or for the ecosystems they destroy. They're not the only way, either.

This is how tropical deforestation works (with crops/grazing land):

1. Huge areas of tropical forest are burned to the ground or chopped down. The soil remaining is fairly nutritious for farming... but surprisingly very shallow.

2. For a while, crops can be grown in this soil.

3. However, the soil no longer has the trees and layers of undergrowth to protect it from erosion or keep it hydrated, so it quickly becomes completely barren. Dust.

4. But instead of rethinking how to farm, so many corporations just decide to cut down more tropical forest and start the process over because they don't care. Deforestation isn't just turning trees into farmland... it's turning whole ecosystems into dust.

I hope you can see why things need to change now, and preserving/restoring trees in the places where they're being cut down the most rapidly is a great step in the right direction.

Okay, I kind of went on a tangent there, but I hope you find that at least a little interesting! I'm passionate about this kind of stuff. c:

Anyway, WeForest seems really cool and reputable. Especially the fact that it's community-run:

I'm really happy Wildworks chose to support them, and I'm hoping they will continue working with them at some point.

I hope what happened in April can be a regular thing! Maybe for two weeks every two months, the membership proceeds can go towards initiatives like this.

Alright, that's all I got for now... see you in Jamaa!

Multiple Capitals + Play for the Planet Update

Hey Jammers! It's me, DoomyPanda, back yet again with another short post about usernames–– though I think this one will be more informative.

If you've joined AJ within the past few years, you might have at some point found someone with a username with multiple capital letters in it and wondered how they got it.

At some point in the past few years, an update silently removed the ability to make new accounts with multiple capital letters in their name. Because of this, having multiple capitals in a name can be the mark of someone who's been playing for a long time!

But... why is having multiple caps no longer approved?

For a while, this was a mystery to me.

But then I remembered.... a certain jammer on my buddy list, who's username has since been converted to one of those Jammer[random numbers] names.

This person's original name?

fSlHuEfEfPy

You might be wondering how I even remember that, given that this person's username has been changed.

But I want you to look closely at it. Notice anything?

...

...

...

...

The lowercase letters spell fluffy, and the capital letters spell sheep!

I met this person within the first couple years of me playing AJ, and it probably took years before I was looking at my buddy list one day and finally figured it out xD

It's a really clever idea for a username... but these kinds of usernames are unfortunately most likely why multiple caps got banned. If you can spell something cool like fluffy sheep... you could also spell something not that cool, if ya know what I mean :0

So.. I guess there's a good reason why you can't put multiple caps in your username anymore!

I'm glad AJHQ didn't change usernames like mine to fit their new rule. Rainbow000Pegasus would be a lot less symmetrical if that happened xD

–––

I was about to end this post here, but then I found some new information on Wildworks' involvement in Playing for the Planet:

So, the official Playing For The Planet site put out an update of what all the participating game developing companies have done so far:

The lead designer of Animal Jam Classic says that Wildworks' next steps are to "refine and expand the renewable energy system," which isn't very clear but I hope we get some cooler things out of it!

So this only talks about the Eco-System, which is great and all, but none of the other commitments Wildworks made are mentioned.

These commitments Wildworks made earlier this past year in the Playing for the Planet process are still up on the website:

Earlier this year, there were about two weeks where if you bought a membership, part of that money would go towards a tree planting effort. We never got any updates on exactly how that would work, and if they would keep doing that, as this original pledge entails.

My theory is that the current pandemic is making these pledges difficult somehow, though I'm not sure. I'm hoping that they won't just get swept under the rug, and that when times are better they'll be revisited.

What do you think about all this? Do you have any other environmental ideas for Animal Jam?

Name Spotlight

@MegX3
please let me know what day/time (and timezone) you can be online so I can trade you the prizes! :0

–––

I have found the best username in all of Animal Jam.

It needs no explanation.

I've also found the best animal name in all of AJ, but it's the best for completely different reasons:

Aww :)

It just stuck out to me and made me smile. I wish I'd named my panda Magical Kindshadow, but I don't think "shadow" was an available part of animal names until a few years ago.

Just a low-content post today because I felt like it :P

For now, I'll see you in Jamaa~

Play Wild Delay + A Decent Update

@MegX3
if you can, let me know a day/time (with timezone) where you know you'll be able to go online to collect your prizes! :0

–––

Hey Jammers! We got ourselves an update today. It seems late, like it just came out today or yesterday instead of the customary Thursday.

It's not too bad, though! We got some actually new stuff, and thankfully, no forced Play Wild ad.

But before we get into that, here's a much-needed announcement from AJHQ regarding Play Wild:

So, if you play Play Wild (or as it's now called, Animal Jam), you might know that people using Apple devices have not had access to the most recent update. I went online on my Mac to check, and it seems that I had access to the last update, but people using iPhones are definitely not getting access to it.

For the above D.E. post, AJHQ is thankfully very honest about what's going on between them and Apple.

Aaaand, that's probably why we don't have a Play Wild ad in the Jamaa Journal this time around.

(These pages are out of order here, just fyi)

We got some new eco items:

All of these are items that would require electricity in real life. I'm not really a fan of any in particular, but it's awesome that they're all nonmember!

I think I'd like the eco ground light the best if it was a bit more detailed looking c:

I think it wouldn't hurt to include some eco-friendly items that are more natural and aren't necessarily powered by electricity. Such as... an herb garden! Growing your own herbs (or fruits, or vegetables) is a very sustainable way to reduce your carbon footprint and have a better relationship with the earth. No plastic packaging, no pollution from shipping, and pesticides aren't necessary.

I think a small herb garden would be a good idea for an item because we already have garden items focused around flowers and vegetables.

Or even better than an herb garden... a wildflower garden, to help pollinators :D

Cheetahs are here– meaning, cheetahs have returned. I really like the color schemes of the purple and the yellow cheetahs c:

The restaurant den, based on the Dinner Party room, is baaaaack.

Tiki Trouble is actually one of my favorite adventures, and probably the only seasonal adventure I really love. Can't wait to play it soon!

National Honeybee Day is here! We really should be celebrating bees in general, not just honeybees, because the bees that are really struggling the most are wild bees that are threatened by habitat destruction and fragmentation.

We also got National Dog Day coming on the 26th!

That's all well and good, but I have to let you know that one of the facts AJHQ added in at the bottom of this page is completely false.

Dogs are far from the most genetically diverse species. I have no idea where AJHQ even got that idea.

It's not known for sure what the species with the most genetic diversity is, but anyone who's taken a biology class knows that fruit flies are understood to be extremely genetically diverse, and it's usually taught in school that they are the most genetically diverse species-- though of course that's not entirely true. The worm C. brenneri also has a huge amount of genetic diversity, maybe more than fruit flies.

Generally, smaller microorganisms tend to have the most diversity, far more than bigger creatures.

I'm kinda disappointed in AJHQ for this factual blunder, though I'm not surprised at this point. Did they just fire everyone responsible for doing research?

I'm not expecting AJ to be like going to school, but for an educational game, ya'll can do better.

--

I think I'll make a post on the 26th dedicated to National Dog Day. For now, just keep this in mind: adopt, don't shop. If you want a dog, remember to rescue a pup in need from a shelter instead of buying one from a breeder.

There are so many suffering dogs in the world's shelters because of dog breeders treating them like products, like objects. Don't support the dog breeding industry-- it causes so much pain, and there are plenty of shelter dogs who would love to be rescued.

Alright, that's all I got for now. What do you think about this update, or the fiasco with Play Wild?

See you in Jamaa!

Hey Jammers! It's August 10th, and you know what that means?

We get to see who won the reader appreciation giveaway!

I've actually been super excited for this day–– we got such a good amount of entries! 6 total, in fact :D

Thank ya'll for participating, and because of the great turnout, I'll definitely have more giveaways and contests in the future! Maybe I'll do something like the riddle contest again. Hmm...

But I'm sure, more than anything right now, you're itching to hear what the mystery number is!

So I'll tell you.

Prepare to be shocked and amazed...

It's...

*drumroll*

The number....

*drumroll*

The myth....

*drumroll intensifies*

The legend...

*DRUMROLL GETS WORSE*

THE GREAT AND POWERFUL...

*AAAGGHH PLEASE MAKE IT STOP*

NUMBERRRRR....

11

!!!!

Betcha guys didn't expect that one B)

I bet it knocked your socks right off.

I bet you're still struggling to catch your breath like you just ran 5 miles through the Sahara Desert without breaks in order to catch a glimpse of the rare number 11 in its natural habitat.

Yep.

I was a little surprised too when I used the true random number generator to get it. But I guess there's an equal chance of getting a small number than it is to get a more "normal" number, like 56.

So, who's the winner?

Which lucky person's guess was the closest to 11?

Well, you see...

It's MegX3!!! (>^0^)>

MegX3 guessed the lucky number 7, the closest of all the guesses to 11!

I sent a buddy request to you so we can find a time to trade you the prizes :)

---

Thank you all for participating! If you entered but didn't win, I'm still grateful for you. I'll definitely be doing more contests/giveaways in the future, and I'll try to have contests with multiple winners so everyone gets a better chance.

Until then...

See you in Jamaa :)

Sad Things / Happy Things

Hey Jammers!

I gotta be honest with you, I've been feeling super depressed. Like, deeply depressed. Along with everything being difficult and uncertain in my world and in the world at large, the uncertainty with AJ has been hard to deal with.

I guess I get so emo about Animal Jam Classic and have played so long because it's been such an important safe haven for me. So feeling like WildWorks is caring less and less about it, feeling like its future is uncertain, really, really hurts.

It reminds me of when I was in my old apartment that had a big shared backyard. There were these two beautiful trees that were so important to me that the landlord wanted to cut down for an arbitrary reason, out of paranoia.

The trees made the backyard cool and shady in the summer, they were homes for different birds and creatures, and they were like an island of green in a landscape that was otherwise concrete and urban. They felt like home.

I remember when I heard the landlord was thinking of cutting them down, I put so much effort into writing this long respectful, informative email about all the good these trees do for the backyard, environment, and the community, and why killing them is not necessary and would do more harm than good.

And, they cut them down anyway.

Caring deeply about things that no one else seems to care about has been a big theme in my life. The instability and lack of communication with Animal Jam is like another giant nail in the coffin.

It's funny, I was originally going to name this post "Some Happy Things" and it turned into one of the most depressing posts on this blog xD

But I wanna be real with you, because maybe if you're feeling sad too, that honesty can help you feel a little less alone.

The second half of this post is more positive.

----

Regardless of the update situation, there are still nice people in Jamaa. I know this community gets a bad rep, but most people you'll meet in the game are kind.

For example, I randomly started talking with a person who taught me about a 2018 glitch I wasn't aware of: if there was an all-lowercase username from an inactive beta user you wanted, you could get that username by making the first letter a capital when you make that account.

The More Ya Know.

I also went to the Back-to-school Party for the first time in a bunch of years:

It was kind of a weird experience at first, because I don't think I've been there since this party came out around 2015, and so much has changed in the world since then.

I hope seeing me get overly emo about a kids game is what you came here to see, because you'll be seeing a lot more of it xD

Something that hasn't changed, though, is how entertaining it is to watch roleplayers.

Enchanted: *looking at volcano* i got first place
Queen: ew no u didn't
Arctic: don't be mean, Enchanted did get first place!

Queen:

And then...

:')

Maybe we can't always rely on WildWorks to make the best decisions...

but we can rely on each other to make each other smile.

See you in Jamaa!
